The idea of talking to someone new can sometimes cause a lot of fear in our lives, but it doesn’t have to.
Talking to strangers doesn’t have to be a gut-wrenching experience.
Here are 5 tips on how to overcome fear and talk to someone with more confidence.
Breathe
When you start getting nervous, breathe. Take deep breaths in and out and focus on your breathing. This can help calm you down.
Visualize success
Often, we visualize and assume the worst. We imagine the person rejecting us or utterly failing. Don’t! Do the opposite. Assume the best. Visualize success. See yourself acting confident and talking well with the other person. Visualize them talking with you and having an enjoyable conversation.
Take a friend
Sometimes having someone with us is all we need to help allay fear. We want to be able to do it on our own, but as we practice, having a friend there with us to support us can be a great boost.
Name how you feel and why
Name how you feel and why. Sometimes just putting a name to our feelings can help us look at it differently. When you look at the why, you can help put things in perspective. Often the thing we fear really isn’t that big of a deal once we look at it.
Act!
Probably the best way to overcome fear is the act. Action overcomes fear. When you act, the fear starts to go away. When you delay, and wait, it grows and gets bigger, and it becomes harder to act. Act before you have time for fear to grow.
Extra: Visit a Counselor
If social anxiety and fear are a constant struggle for you, consider going to a counselor. They can help you work through your social fears and become more confident and sociable with others.
You Can Do It
You don’t have to live in fear. You can go, meet new people, and enjoy it. For more information on how to meet and talk to new people, check out these articles:
